New Zealand: Culture, Community, and Natural Wonder

Often overlooked by its neighbour, nestled in the far corner of the world, New Zealand is a destination that encapsulates all the world’s greatest beauties into two islands that have collectively nurtured an extensive and famous culture. Whether you’re all for a busy city, are an avid sports lover, or would rather spend your trip traversing the wide mountain ranges, New Zealand offers an experience for everyone.

North Island

The country’s North Island, although the smaller of the two (making it perfect for travellers on shorter trips), is home to an incredible range of destinations and activities.

The journey begins in Auckland, where the rich and diverse culture is immediately evident, with Britomart and Viaduct Harbour pulsing with the energy of countless bars and restaurants, and Karagahape Road housing the city’s eclectic art, alternative shopping outlets and quaint coffee shops. Sports enthusiasts will also find incredible value in the city, as it is home to the world famous ‘All-Blacks’, playing their rugby in the heart of Auckland. The city provides an excellent welcome to the country.

City life

If the busy city lifestyle is not to your liking, then heading south of Auckland will lead you to Rotorua.

Here, the lively atmosphere of Auckland is traded for lively atmosphere underground as it is home to the island’s geysers and hot springs, celebrated within the Māori culture.

There are a wide range of opportunities to experience this within the area, such as Te Pā Tū, where traditional Māori practices and traditions have been frozen in time.

Here, you can immerse yourself in a fire ceremony welcome, known as the Ahi Tuku. Following this, an extensive menu of Māori food is served alongside complimentary Rongoā tea - an incredible experience for those wanting to take a step back in time.

Body of water in New Zealand

The north of the island is home to the Bay of Islands, a stunning area that boasts some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. A key feature of this area is the extensive opportunity for surfing, with plenty of surf schools and beginner-friendly waves to ride.

More experienced surfers are also accommodated by the Tokerau Beach, providing great conditions for various skill levels.

If a quieter option is desired, then the Bay of Islands offers beaches that are more secluded, for example Paihia Beach or Te Tii Bay; ideal for those looking for the perfect place to tan, or to take a dip in calmer waters.

South Island

The South Island of New Zealand similarly provides incredible scenery but offers a largely different experience compared to the North. Lush, warm beaches are replaced by icy glaciers and mountains, eager to be explored.

The Southern Alps reside here, a mountain range that stretches across the entire island.  These present incredible opportunities for hiking within the multiple national parks, such as Fiordland or Mount Cook, each boasting a variety of trails suitable for all confidence levels.

Mountains beyond a body of water in New Zealand

While inhabiting much of the island, the mountain ranges aren’t all there is to offer. Nestled away within these national parks on the shore of Lake Wakatipu is Queenstown, an adventure sports lover’s dream.

Although quaint in atmosphere, the town offers many chances for adrenaline-filled activity, whether that be bungy jumping from the Kawarau Bridge, canyoning through the Routeburn Valley, or flying down the world’s steepest zipline. If you don’t fancy thrill-seeking, the town has many vineyards and wine caves to tour that help to produce the finest Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, alongside other cool-climate wines.
