1. The whole wildlife experience literally blew my mind! From sitting beside a watering hole in the evening with a sundowner, watching hippos grunt and slop about. Seeing every imaginable species, including lions, leopards, elephants and giraffes, to name a few. But lying in the safety of our glorious safari tent, hearing lions call to one another across the dried riverbed at night was the ultimate. Most nights there would be some wildlife taking a wander through camp, and we would hear all about it over our fireside breakfast each morning. Our bush camps fully immersed us in the full wonder of South Luangwa National Park.

2. The hospitality was out of this world. Locals waved as we left the airport and children came running to greet us. The rangers were some of the most experienced I have ever come across, so we felt completely safe and at ease throughout.

The camps were not just comfortable they were intimate (just 4 rooms in some cases) and extraordinary with lovely, thoughtful touches and the most comfortable beds. The food was delicious and plentiful, in fact quite incredible given our setting.

3. The ‘thunder’ of Victoria Falls is such a special experience. You can choose to have a sophisticated afternoon tea on the lawn at the famous Victoria Falls hotel, but of course we chose the wet option and embraced the full falls tour, complete with rainbows to die for.

A reason to return?

I could visit Africa every single year and it still wouldn’t be enough! Different seasons and landscapes bring such a wealth of varying experiences. It has been 20 years since my last visit, and I’m absolutely hooked again. The wonders of the natural world fascinate me, and the experience of getting up close and personal is such a privilege.
